Let's Get Dirty 5k

The mud run is this Saturday, November 10th at Slippery Rock University. There will be a group of us meeting at the park n ride off the Saegertown exit on Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m. The race will cost $15.00 and is just a fun run. There is an awards race but it starts at 9:15 a.m. You will want to bring extra clothes and a bag to put them in. Remember the goal is to get as muddy as possible and have fun. We like to car pool so we can figure out the driving situation on Saturday morning. If you are interested in running you can see Alexis Mowris tomorrow she will have the forms to fill out. Hope to see you on Saturday!

Woot!

Jr. High Girls = 1st ever Region 3 Invitational title!
Varsity Boys = 1st since 2008.
What a grand day for the S-town Panthers.  Congratulations to all of our fabulous runners.

We earned this.  Be proud.

And, oh year, junior high--you are officially cut!  Which means you made it through the season.  Good job! I'm so proud of all of you.

More later on Districts!  I'm so excited.

Region 3 Invitational

The bus leaves at 7am for Hydetown Elementary School on Saturday for the Region 3 Invitational race.  This race has no bearing on anything; it's just a race for Region 3 teams as a finish to the season and to help prepare for the district championship next week at Buhl Park in Sharon/Hermitage.

The race times begin with Jr. High Girls at 10am followed by the boys at 10:30, varsity girls at 11am and varsity boys at 11:45.  The award ceremony will follow after final calculations are made.  There will be shirts for sale for $15 each--they are the long sleeve wicking ones like we sold last year.

The junior high season ends that day, as well.  They are not permitted to practice next week.  They may support the team next Saturday by attending the district championships and ride the bus with the team, though.  They can wash and turn in all of their uniforms/bags, etc. any time after this Saturday.  If they choose to wear their sweats to districts then they can turn it all in the week after districts.

I fully expect to have a great day this Saturday!  See you there.

What a Night!

Please congratulate the Varsity Boys and the Junior High Girls on going 8-0 this season and wrapping up the Region 3 championships.  For the boys, they have had 5 undefeated seasons in a row with 42 consecutive Region victories.  For the girls, this marked the first Region championship for Saegertown.  Ever.
Our Varsity girls finished at 3-5 and our Junior High boys were 4-4 on the season.  Not too bad overall!

Next race--Region 3 Invitational at Titusville (held at Hydetown Elementary) on Saturday, October 20th.  The races begin at 10am with Junior High Girls.  Then Districts, then hopefully States.

Woot!

HOAGIE ORDER FORMS ARE DUE TOMORROW, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 10TH WITH A MINIMUM OF 15 SALES.

Maplewood

We race at Maplewood High School.  Times are as usual--4:15 or after probably.  It is a big day, particularly for the varsity boys.  If we win this race we will be the Region 3 champions.  If we win, we will have 5 undefeated seasons in a row.  This is a huge deal.  We shall see.  Our junior high girls could be undefeated as well.  And that is awesome.

I am so proud of all of our runners.  They show up, run their hearts out, and the results show that their hard work was worth it.

Go Panthers!

Oil City . . .

What a great race last evening.  Our Boys Varsity continued their great season and are now 6-0 on the year tied with Maplewood for the Region 3 title.  Our girls didn't fair so well, losing both and now stand at 3-3 for the year.

In junior high action, our girls are 6-0 and the boys suffered their first two defeats (through forfeits) because we do not have enough runners to comprise a team.  They are now 4-2.

We do not have races the next two Saturdays so we can rest for the final push to districts.  Next Tuesday is our biggest race of the season.  We race at Maplewood.  Whoever wins there will be Region champs (for the boys varsity).
Go Panthers!

Oil City Meet

We have never raced at Oil City.  I don't know where the race is at this point. If I can get the information tomorrow from our Athletic Director, I will update.  I can only assume the race is at the high school.  If nothing else, a call to Oil City High School would be able to provide the information.  I can do that around 10:00.  Check back...

PIAA Foundation Results

Great day at Hershey.  Our boys took 4th out of 19 A schools.  Not too bad.  Hunter led the way with a 5th place finish followed by Morgan in 13th.  For full results you can to PennTrackXC at: http://pa.milesplit.com/meets/117411-6th-piaa-foundation-xc-invitational

Looks like a good day for all around!

After all of that . . .

The district has given us a van for use to transport the runners to Hershey this weekend.  We just have to cover gas.  That helps us a lot.  We depart Friday morning at 8am from the faculty parking lot.  The rest of the team will race Saturday at Sharpsville.  The bus departs at 7:30am sharp.

Big Win All Around

All four teams win both!  The varsity boys ran a nearly flawless race, taking the first three positions guaranteeing a win.  The top 7 ran exactly as they needed to.  The girls won two forfeits.  The junior high boys ran a nice race to beat Rocky Grove, plus a forfeit.  The girls were excellent, as well--two forfeits.

Boys:  4-0; Girls:  3-1; Jr. High Boys:  4-0; Jr. High Girls:  4-0.  WOW.

More later.

Cochranton and Beyond

Big race at Cochranton.  The hill looms before us.  The race is held at Cochranton Elementary School which is straight through the light, then on your left.  Race time will be around 4-4:15 I suspect.  Our kids will be departing at 2:30.

Our varsity boys could be in for a great race.  Hope to see all there.

Sharpsville information is above, as well.

Great Race!

Yesterday afternoon our boys varsity team started off the season with a stellar performance, thumping Franklin and Titusville in Region 3 action.  Hunter won in 16:09 with Morgan 2nd in 16:42.  Brendon and Matt S. followed in 4th and 5th with 17:04 and 17:22.  Most of our runners raced down their personal bests last night.

The girls went 1-1 which beats forfeiting everything like we had to last year.  Alexis ran a 21:28 taking 3rd with Maegan taking 5th in 23:35.  Again, the girls mostly met their goals.

The junior high teams both went 2-0.  This is exceptional because the other schools had far greater numbers.  In boys' action Lloyd, Wesley and Aidan were 2, 3 and 4, respectively.  Jarrett and Devin were 7th and 9th which was good.  In girls' action Gaby excelled again running 15:50 taking 1st.  Beka took 2nd in 16:09.  Emily S. was 4th, Kendra, 9th, and Allysa was 11th.  We're getting better.

Great job runners!  Our next race is next Tuesday at Cochranton with Rocky Grove attending as well.

Home Race Tuesday

On Tuesday, we have our one and only home race.  We need to have some food supplies and some parents to help set up and keep an eye on things during the meet.  Mrs. DeJohn has said she will bring two bunches of bananas (to be sliced in half).  We need oranges (quartered), apples (sliced)?, cookies maybe, and other items for the runners at the end of the race.  I will fill our team water jugs up with water or gatorade.  Anyone want to bring cups? Other things?  I do have a cooler if someone wants to bring icee pops.

Could you please let me know as this will be on my mind until I have some volunteers.  Thanks.  Runners--show this to your parents :)

PIAA Foundation Race ?s

So parents:  The district has indicated that they will NOT pay for transportation for the race in Hershey.  We knew this was going to be the case, but we tried anyways.  Enterprise will rent us a Suburban or a Yukon XL for the trip, which will carry the 8 of us that go (including me).  The cost is 314.00 for the vehicle in addition to gas for the trip (which will be around another 150 more).  So that's $465, approximately, plus the entry fee of 100.  We're looking at about 575 plus food for the trip.  The hotel rooms have been donated very kindly by Mr. and Mrs. Johnston (Hunter's parents).  The booster club can pick up whatever is necessary.  Any parent who has questions or ideas or comments, please comment to me via an e-mail @ whetrick26@gmail.com.  I'm open for suggestions as to how to fund this.

McDowell Invitational

Great first race.  Out varsity boys took a fifth place finish and showed they are ready to compete in the District X this year.

Many high finishes and great performances.  Very proud.  No practice on Monday . . . come back strong next week.

Here are the results:  http://bigwhitetrailer.com/timing/results_2012/20120901McDowell.php

First Race

Our first race at McDowell this Saturday will be a sight to behold.  Our boys varsity team is running extremely well--I expect several very high places and we'll see what the team is capable of overall.  Our girls varsity is improving.  I hope for good things.  The junior high runners are starting to understand that you reap what you sow.  Some are ready; others will see how fast others can be.

I am very excited!  No practice on Friday--you've earned the break.  Rest well and be ready to go bright and early.  We leave at 7am sharp.  We race at 8:40 with boys jr. high kicking us off.  Check out the information above.

It Was A Good First Day

So, we need to keep hydrated.  Everyone needs to drink water throughout the day so as not to get dizzy, disoriented, unnecessarily sore during workouts.  We have a huge race this Saturday.  Are you ready?

I am so ready to see you achieve your goals . . .

Updates and Changes

We have a few changes:  1st--The bus for the McDowell Invitational leaves at 7am not 7:30.  We will leave at 7 sharp.  2nd--We have a few new runners:  Jessica T., grade 10; Kyler D., grade 10; and Andrea [On Dray Uh] M., grade 9. Please welcome them.  They will not be racing this weekend but perhaps by September 11, out first region race we can have them whipped into shape.

Day 2 of practice:  1200s--yuck.  It's over. First day of school tomorrow.  To all my seniors, note this.  I have been looking forward to you arriving all summer.  We are going to learn so much.  I already am very excited to get to know you and teach you.  And be taught about each of you.

1st Afternoon Practice

Practice went very well this afternoon.  Got some miles in, got a new runner--shoutout to Jessica T.  We will get faster this week because now our legs will recover.  Keep up the solid attitude.

I love running in the rain.

Time Trial #2

The time trial today was pretty phenomenal.  Nearly everyone improved dramatically.  See above for updated results!  Great job runners.  Week 2 is over.  Rest is in order.  We back off the hard high mileage we've been doing and focus on shorter warm-ups, specific speed work and short cool downs.

Please take a moment and comment on the previous post about Houck's pool party--as to what you are going to bring if anything.  5pm, remember.

Monday, practice is at 3pm with your uniforms on for photos.  Then we hit the course at 3:30 for our first afternoon practice.

Friday, August 24, 2012

Two Things . . .

1st:  Time Trial #2 tomorrow.  Be ready.
2nd:  Houck's house, 5pm on Sunday, for a Cross Country pool party.  If you would like to bring anything to eat, snack on, etc., please comment to this post so all can see what you're bringing.

Well . . . well . . . well . . .

Some of you seem to be reading the blog.  Good.  Today, we ran 3x1-milers.  It went well, for most of you.  Some of you are starting to see the ever-so-slight injuries creeping in.  This is from a lack of summer training.  Work through it as best you can.  Remember--no practice, no racing.  But if you're hurt, please sit, stretch, ice, and try to recover.

Ask yourself these questions:  Am I running my evening minutes? (this is done to work out the lactic acid that built up during the intense morning workout)  Did I do my Danielle Stretches (more than at practice)?  Did I ice properly after I got home?  Did my nutrition today reflect my positive running attitude?

The things your coaches have you do are absolutely based on solid scientific evidence.  You cannot neglect your body's right to recover and prepare for future workouts.

Good work today.  I like to think we are bonding as a unit, working toward common goals, and having fun in the process.

Ran Course

Does anyone actually look at this?

Reservoir Sorts Out the Weak

We ran so long and far on Reservoir that I got tired watching all of the steam come off of the hot, sweaty, tired bodies.  We ran up to 10 cycles of each of the three sections of the hill today.  Then we ran one full cycle just to prove that we weren't ready to quit.  Amazing.

We are ready to push the envelope this year.  We are ready to repeat, again, for the 5th time.  And we have a full squad of runners at each level for the first time since I started coaching--eleven years ago.   I'm excited.  Very.

Today we took another chunk out of Reservoir.  We will not back down.  And it was one hill of a good time!

Monday, August 20, 2012

2nd Monday Blues

Today went well.  We ran many, many 200s.  In fact, the varsity boys ran 30x200m while the girls and the junior high boys ran 24x200m.  The junior high girls ran 20x200m.  This was another high mileage day then.  Tomorrow will be another hill workout.  We need hills because they simulate speed work without having to go as fast.  Reservoir works nicely.

We talked about soreness vs. injury today.  Remember, if you're injured--you hurt so badly that your running is greatly affected and you risk furthering the injury, then be certain to sit, ice, and stretch.  But, as you know, if you sit out of our workouts, then you are risking further injury if you race.  If you can't practice (for whatever reason--injury, appointments, whatever) then you can't race, because you are not putting in the miles to make you race-ready--both physically and mentally.  Plus, it is a slap in the face to those who are logging every mile during practice and in the evening.

Every day you get to choose.  Will today be a good day?  A bad day?  Can today be a day that I get to build my character and become the person I'm capable of becoming?  Or is it a day of indifference?  You decide every day what person you are.

Choose well, my young padawans.

Also, Nate texted me and said his first week went well.  He logged 75 miles and felt great.  He wishes us well.  Go Nate.  Go UNC-Charlotte 49ers!

Saturday, August 18, 2012

First Time Trial

We had a grand start to the official timing of events.  We appear ready and poised to decide if we want to compete for Region 3 championships.  The first day of time trials went better than expected considering all of the miles we logged this week.  Check out the results above "Time Trials 2012."

Sunday--60 minutes for varsity; 30 minutes for junior high.
Fair--go and enjoy!

Friday, August 17, 2012

Reservoir and More

Today we took a little bite of Reservoir.  Just a taste.  Tomorrow we race.  Let's see what we've got!  First time trial:  9am whistle.

Thursday, August 16, 2012

Long Day . . .

Today was our long run day, so it was a long day!  Houck and I ran nearly 8 miles so the faster members on the team did 11-12 or more.  It was hot and humid and just right!

Tomorrow we run fartleks and spend a bit of time getting acquainted with Reservoir hill.  I wonder if we'll be friends?  We shall see.

Stay healthy.  Race day Saturday coming up.  Whistle blows at 9 sharp.  You need to stretch and run a warm-up so plan accordingly.  No later than 8:30 would be my recommendation.

Wednesday, August 15, 2012

Day 3

400s today.  Lots of them.  All went fairly well.  More soreness/minor injuries happening.  We have to prevent.  It is the best cure.  Be sure to drink LOTS of fluids.  Salt intake is a priority which is why sports drink work so well--they contain a high level of sodium which aids hydration and recovery.  Be on top of your health.

Parent meeting tonight at 7:30 at SES playground pavilion.  See you there. Fuzzy is running from there tonight at 7:30 for anyone interested in getting in their evening minutes with a group.

Good practice.  Tomorrow is a long easy run as our workout.

Tuesday, August 14, 2012

Day 2: 800s Were . . . Well, 800s

Today was tough.  But we can thank God that the weather was cooperative.  Our varsity boys ran 8x800s.  That's 4 miles of speed work.  So, we ran a 10 min. pre-warmup (about 1 mile +), a 30 min. warm-up (4 miles), 4 miles of speed work, a 2 mile easy run after to recover, then 5x100s (about 1/4 mile) then our cool down (15 min. of very slow recovery running) of probably 1 mile.  For the varsity boys, that's 12.25 miles today.  Then tonight's 20 min. run will be another 3 or so.  So 15 miles.  That's a day!  All other runners can drop a few miles off here and there based on less speedwork and warmup time.  Best guess = jr. high girls still did 8-9 miles today.  WOW.

We are coming together!  I saw much.  Several things to point out: 1. Many runners, after having completed their own work, went and ran with teammates.  That is leadership.  It is not really a coach-able trait.  It is something you are born with or consciously choose to make yourself into.  I am very proud of all who step up and help in this way.  2. Injuries vs. soreness--Always ice, drink chocolate milk (if you can) after practice, and do your Danielle Stretches.  You have to be diligent to prevent injury.  Soreness is acceptable because it means you worked hard.  Injury is where we have to stop and evaluate the best route to recovery.  Let your coaches and trainers help you figure out the difference.  3. We say goodbye to Mackinzie.  Mack--you are one of us.  4. I'm sure there's more that I can't think of because I'm busy.

All paperwork is due tomorrow.  All of it.  Parent meeting at 7:30pm at SES pavilion.

400s are tomorrow.  I can't wait.

Monday, August 13, 2012

1st Practice: Check!

Day 1 is officially over (except for your evening minutes--varsity 20 min.; jr. high 10 min. some time this evening).

Today we only ran about 5 miles, maybe 6.  It was a day for talking and choosing how we would progress.

I am very proud of all who gave their all today.  Keep it up.  Come back tomorrow.  It will get better.  You have to fight that negative voice in your head.  It is not real.  You get to choose every day to be the person you want to be.  I believe in you.  I do.

Tomorrow is a big day.  We are going to put in many more miles.  Remember to take an ice bath after running every time.  Do your Danielle Stretches after running every time.

Fuzzy is running at the Dam tonight at 6:30 if you care to join him.

Parent Meeting at SES playground pavilion at 7:30 on Wednesday.

Great day.  See you tomorrow.  Leave a comment if you are checking out the blog; it lets me know you are here!  Thanks.

It Is Time!!!

Okay. Come one, come all.  It is that time of year.  If we don't start preparing NOW, then the season will be one that just goes through the motions.  I need the seniors to start becoming the leaders they need to be.  Without you, we have little chance to succeed in defending our Region 3 Boys Title.  And the girls are that close, too!

We need to call all of the underclassmen and get them running.  Mondays and Wednesdays at 8am with Houck and me, Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:30pm at the Dam with Fuzzy.  Leave a comment on this post if you're interested in maintaining our winning form.

Also, physicals are coming up, too.  Come to Open Gyms to get the updated information.

We've been talking the talk.  Now is the time to walk the walk.

College Decision

I am happy to say February 1st I will be signing my National Letter of Intent for the University of North Carolina Charlotte. I Visited UNCC 3 weekends ago. I fell in love with the campus and the team. I am very excited to take my running to the next level.

Nonetheless, I will greatly miss Saegertown Cross Country. I can honestly say that I would not be the person I am today with out it.

I want to thank everyone for your support! I want to especially thank Hetrick, Houck, Matt, and Fuzzy for their excellent coaching and motivation !

Join us for Open Gyms--snow included for free. We never cancel. Coming to a Tuesday and Thursday at your school--Houck, Fuzzy, and Hetch included for free, as well.
